Ford's sporting fastback from 1969 to 1973: a SportsRoof with its own hood, stripes and stronger suspension, sold in far larger numbers than the Boss cars.

The Mach 1 was new for 1969 and came only as a fastback. It sold 72,458 in its first year.12
Its success helped end the GT: the GT option was last offered in 1969, when 5,396 were sold.34
For 1971 the standard content was cut back. The base engine became the 302 two-barrel, and the NASA-style hood scoops were a no-cost option on it.35
The name outlived the first generation and carried on into the Mustang's second generation.2one source

On the 1969–70 cars the standard hood scoop is a dummy with the turn-signal indicators set into its back, facing the driver. A functional "shaker" scoop was optional.36
A 1971 or 1972 Mach 1 has its lower body painted black or argent, with a bright molding along the top edge of the paint.35
The 1971 Mach 1 has a black honeycomb grille with sport lamps and a honeycomb panel between the tail lamps.35
The body code on the door tag is 63C on a 1969–70 Mach 1 and 63R from 1971; from 1971 the body code in the VIN is 05.23

Every conflict behind the figures on this page. All rulings.
Open
Our ruling: Unresolved: 280 or 285 hp. CJ Pony Parts' entry describes the earlier 428, so it does not settle the 1971 engine.
Open
Our ruling: Unresolved: 95, 98 or 99 hp for the six, and 140 or 141 hp for the 302. Over-Drive's two figures are the ones Maine Mustang gives for 1973.
Open
Our ruling: Unresolved: one source each. We show both figures.
Settled
Our ruling: We use 177 and 266 hp, which Maine Mustang and Wikipedia's Mach 1 table give independently. Over-Drive's 173 and 259 stand alone.
Settled
Our ruling: We use 36,499, which Maine Mustang and CJ Pony Parts give alike. Over-Drive's 36,449 stands alone.
Settled
Our ruling: We use 35,440 Mach 1s and 25,274 Grandés, which Maine Mustang, CJ Pony Parts and MustangSpecs give alike. Over-Drive's figures stand alone.
Settled
Our ruling: 63C on the 1969–70 cars and 63R from 1971. MustangSpecs' «all first generation» holds only for 1969–70; CJ Pony Parts' tables and Wikipedia both give 63R for 1971.
Settled
Our ruling: We use a 2-barrel for the H-code and 375 hp for the Boss 429. Wikipedia's 1969–70 table does not cite CJ Pony Parts, so the two agree independently. Maine Mustang's own 1970 list has 375 hp too.
Settled
Our ruling: We use a 2-barrel for the H-code, as Wikipedia's table and CJ Pony Parts do independently.
