The year in brief

The 1969–70 body is 187.4 inches long, 3.8 inches more than the 1967–68 car, on the same 108-inch wheelbase.8910

The Mach 1 sold 72,458 in its first year, almost a quarter of all 1969 Mustangs. The GT, with 5,396 sold, was dropped after 1969.156

The Grandé hardtop was new too, and sold 22,182.124

Ford built 1,628 Boss 302s for 1969. How many Boss 429s it built that year is disputed; see the ruling below.16

Production fell 5.5 percent to 299,824.12

The story of the year

The Boss cars

Semon «Bunkie» Knudsen had come to Ford as president from General Motors, and under him performance led the 1969 line-up: the Mach 1, the Boss 302 and the Boss 429.611

Knudsen brought designer Larry Shinoda over from General Motors. Asked what he was working on, Shinoda answered «the boss's car», and the name stuck.1112

The Boss 302 was Ford's answer to the Chevrolet Camaro in Trans-Am road racing.1012

The Boss 429 put a 375 hp big-block in the fastback so that Ford could qualify the engine for NASCAR, whose rules called for at least 500 road cars.1011

What tells it apart from a 1968.

The 1969 from the side. The numbers match the signs below.

The 1968, for comparison

Four headlamps

One pair sits inside the grille, the other in deep recesses at the outer edges of the fenders. 1969 is the only first-generation year with four headlamps as standard.6891013

A small pony, off to one side

The running horse and its corral are gone from the middle of the grille. A small tri-color pony sits off-center, towards the driver's side, instead.689

No C-shaped side cove

The sculpted C-shaped cove along the sides of the 1965–68 cars is gone. Hardtops and convertibles get a subtler crease running back from the nose.8913

Side vents that face backwards

On hardtops and convertibles a slim dummy vent stays ahead of the rear wheel, but now faces backwards. Fastbacks other than the Boss 302 carry a dummy scoop high on each rear fender instead.810

Longer, on the same wheelbase

The car is 3.8 inches longer than the 1968, on the same 108-inch wheelbase.8910

Rows from Maine Mustang; CJ Pony Parts agrees on hardtops and fastbacks. Maine Mustang also lists the Boss 302 and Boss 429 as rows of their own, but its 299,824 total only works with them counted inside the fastback rows. Added on top, it would be 302,321. Which fastback row holds them is not stated.

Where the sources disagree

Every conflict we found for 1969, and how we settled it. All rulings.

Settled

1969–70 length and width

Our ruling: We use 187.4 inches and 71.3 inches. HowStuffWorks, CJ Pony Parts and Over-Drive's fact sheets give the length, and HowStuffWorks and CJ Pony Parts the width; only Wikipedia's infobox has 187.5 and 71.7. Height depends on the body: Over-Drive gives 51.2 inches for the 1969 coupe and convertible and 50.3 for the fastback.

What each source says (4)
  • Length 187.5 inches, width 71.7 inches (the article's infobox)6one source
  • Overall length grew to 187.4 inches, up 3.8 inches; width 71.3 inches8one source
  • 1969: length 187.4 inches, width 71.3 inches (1968: 183.6 and 70.9)9one source
  • Overall length: 187.4 inches, for both 1969 and 19701016one source

Two errors in Maine Mustang's 1969 engine list

Our ruling: We use a 2-barrel for the H-code and 375 hp for the Boss 429. Wikipedia's 1969–70 table does not cite CJ Pony Parts, so the two agree independently. Maine Mustang's own 1970 list has 375 hp too.

What each source says (3)
  • H = 351 «4v», 250 hp; Z = Boss 429, 376 hp1one source
  • Engine table: 351 Windsor 2-barrel 250 hp; Boss 429 375 hp6one source
  • H 351 2-barrel 250 hp; Z Boss 429 375 hp7one source

Open

The 302 two-barrel (F-code) in 1969–70

Our ruling: Unresolved: 210 or 220 hp. Maine Mustang and Wikipedia's text say 220, Wikipedia's table says 210, and CJ Pony Parts gives one rating for six model years. We show both.

What each source says (3)
  • F = 302 2-barrel, 220 hp, in both 1969 and 1970117one source
  • Text: 1969 brought «a revised» 302 with 220 hp; engine table: 302 2-barrel, 210 hp, 1969–19706one source
  • F = 302 2-barrel, 210 hp, one rating for 1968–19737one source

Open

How many Boss 429s were built for 1969

Our ruling: Unresolved: 857 or 859. Wikipedia, Over-Drive and Car Memories give 859. MustangSpecs prints 857, although its own 1970 page puts the 1969 cars at KK 1201 to 2059, which is 859 numbers by our count. Car Memories adds a line about two Boss Cougars without saying whether they are inside the 859. Maine Mustang's 869 matches no other source, and Wikipedia's 1,359 for both years is one more than 859 + 499.

What each source says (6)
  • Boss 429: 869, and «Total (Includes two Boss Cougars) 299,824»1one source
  • «Boss 429 859», with a separate line «also includes two Boss Cougars 2»18one source
  • «In 1969, Ford produced 859 Boss 429s. Also, two Boss 429 Cougars were produced»; 1,359 for both years19one source
  • «Its list price of $4,868 limited deliveries to 859»10one source
  • «only 857 Boss 429s were sold in 1969»20one source
  • «The first Boss 429 was numbered KK NASCAR 1201 while the last 1969 is numbered 2059»21one source

CJ Pony Parts' 1969 convertibles

Our ruling: We use 11,307 and 3,439. CJ Pony Parts' figures are the 1968 convertible figures, and with them 1969 would add up to 310,454, not the 299,824 that Maine Mustang and MustangSpecs give.

What each source says (2)

Settled

How many 1969 Mustangs had the GT Equipment Group

Our ruling: We use 5,396, which Car Memories and MustangSpecs' GT page give; Wikipedia's 5,396 cites Car Memories. MustangSpecs' Mach 1 page says 5,958, which is exactly the 1969 deluxe SportsRoof figure in the production tables.

What each source says (3)
  • «GT Equipment Group 5,396»18one source
  • «only 5,396 GT models sold that year»22one source
  • «Ford discontinued the GT model the following year (it sold only 5,958 units)»23one source
