The year in brief

The last of the 1963–67 cars had the least trim of the five: no hood script and no fender flags. Five angled slots replaced the three fender vents.12one source

Two new 427s had three two-barrel carburetors: the L68 at 400 hp and the L71 at 435. The L88, a racing 427 rated at 430 hp, went into 20 cars.1234

The handbrake moved from under the dash to between the seats, and Rally wheels became standard.12one source

The story of the year

The L88

The L88 was as close to a racing engine as Chevrolet had offered in regular production, by Wikipedia's account: 12.5:1 compression, one big Holley four-barrel and racing fuel, with lightweight heads (aluminum, by Over-Drive's account).24

Chevrolet advertised it at 430 hp, less than the L89 by Over-Drive's account, though the true figure was said to be about 560 hp, by Wikipedia's and Over-Drive's accounts.24

20 cars had it, by the Black Book's count. The Black Book and Consumer Guide's table list the option at $947.90; Wikipedia and Over-Drive's text give $1,500 (see the ruling).1245

Engines1235

6 engines. Chevrolet's regular production option (RPO) code from GM's own option and engine lists; «Std.» is the standard engine. The 1963–67 VIN carries no engine code.

Gross ratings and RPO codes from GM's engine page, which does not list the L88; its 430 hp is the Black Book's and Wikipedia's figure. Consumer Guide gives the carburetors. The L89 was aluminum heads for the L71, on 16 cars by the Black Book's count.

The 1967 L88 option price

Our ruling: Unresolved. The Black Book and Consumer Guide's table list RPO L88 at $947.90. Wikipedia and Over-Drive's text give $1,500, which Wikipedia ties to «the L88 engine and required options», while Over-Drive's own option list says $1,500 «plus other mandatory options», so Over-Drive does not agree with itself on what the $1,500 covered. All agree on 20 cars and 430 hp.
