The first full model year, and the first with a fastback. The 1965 production table lists 559,451 cars.

Ford counts the earliest Mustangs, built from spring 1964, as 1965 models. Enthusiasts call them 1964½. Wikipedia dates the 1965 series from August 1964, and Maine Mustang puts the cut-over at 17 August 1964.13
The 1964½ cars came as a hardtop or a convertible. The fastback arrived for 1965, and the first Shelby Mustang was built only as a fastback.13
Ford built 15,079 Mustangs with the GT Equipment Group in 1965.3one source
The story of the year
Ford wanted a Mustang that could win races, and Lee Iacocca turned to Carroll Shelby, the builder of the Cobra. The target was the SCCA's B-Production class, which required at least 100 road-going cars.456
Shelby's team in Los Angeles turned K-code fastbacks into GT350s. Out went the rear seat; the High Performance 289 was tuned from 271 to 306 hp.456
Every 1965 GT350 was a Wimbledon White fastback with a black interior. Blue stripes along the rocker panels were standard; only about 28 percent also got the wide Le Mans stripes over the top.456
The road car cost $4,547 new, against $2,533 for a standard 1965 fastback.145
Ken Miles gave the GT350 its first win on Valentine's Day 1965, and the car held the B-class title for three years.4one source
What tells it apart from a 1964½.

The 1965 has an alternator, so the warning light to the right of the odometer reads ALT. On a 1964½ it reads GEN.37
A 200 cu in six (VIN code T) and a 289 V8 (code C) replaced the 1964½'s 170 cu in six (U) and 260 V8 (F).138
There was no 1964½ fastback. The fastback body joined the line for the 1965 model year, so a fastback rules out a 1964½.239
The GT Equipment Group arrived with the 1965: grille-mounted fog lamps, a stripe along the rocker panel, disc brakes and an instrument panel with five round dials.37
The 1965 hood has a chrome molding along its front edge, which the 1964½ lacks. Some early 1965s were built without it.710one source
Ford switched to chrome inside door lock knobs for 1965; on the 1964½ they match the interior. Knobs may have been swapped since.710one source

Maine Mustang also lists Midnight Turquoise and Sunlight Yellow, which are not in CJ Pony Parts' 1965 list. The counts come from one source.

Every conflict we found for 1965, and how we settled it. All rulings.
Settled
Our ruling: We use 409,260. Maine Mustang and CJ Pony Parts give it (Wikipedia's table copies Maine Mustang), and only that figure makes hardtops, convertibles (73,112) and fastbacks (77,079) add up to the 559,451 total that every source agrees on. MustangSpecs' figure is exactly 1,000 higher.
Open
Our ruling: Unresolved. Maine Mustang and CJ Pony Parts list the 121,538 cars of 1964½ apart from the 559,451; if that is right, the whole 1965 model year comes to 680,989. MustangSpecs calls 559,451 the total for the 1965 model year. We show the two apart until a factory source settles it.
