Ford Mustang · 1969–1973

Grandé

The luxury Mustang of 1969–73: a hardtop with a softer ride, extra insulation, wood-grain trim and, from 1970, a vinyl roof.

The story

The Grandé was new for 1969, Ford's most luxurious Mustang, and it came only as a hardtop.12

It was never rare. Its weakest year was 1970, with 13,581 built.234

It stayed in the range until the end of the first generation in 1973.2one source

How to spot a Grandé

Hardtop only

Every Grandé is a hardtop.12

A vinyl roof with Grandé script

On the 1971–73 cars a vinyl roof and Grandé script on the rear roof pillars set it apart from the plain hardtop.15

Wood-grain inside, extra insulation

Inside it has simulated wood trim, and it carries extra sound insulation.16

The door tag

The body code on the door tag is 65E on a 1969–70 Grandé and 65F on a 1971–73.256

Settled

1972 production

Our ruling: We use 125,093, the sum of rows that each have at least two independent sources: 6,401 convertibles and 15,622 fastbacks (CJ Pony Parts and Over-Drive), 18,045 Grandés (Maine Mustang and CJ Pony Parts) and the hardtop and Mach 1 figures, which Maine Mustang, CJ Pony Parts and Over-Drive all give. 6,121 is exactly the 1971 convertible figure, and 16,622 is 1,000 too high, the same slip as the 1965 hardtop figure. 125,093 is also MustangSpecs' 125,903 with two digits swapped. MustangSpecs' rounded 28k Grandés and 33k fastbacks fit none of the lists.

1973 Mach 1 and Grandé production

Our ruling: We use 35,440 Mach 1s and 25,274 Grandés, which Maine Mustang, CJ Pony Parts and MustangSpecs give alike. Over-Drive's figures stand alone.
