The year in brief

The restyled body is 183.6 inches long and 70.9 inches wide. Ford made the car bigger so that a big-block V8 would fit.56

The 390 cu in V8, the S-code, was new for 1967 and the first big-block engine in a Mustang.56

Production fell 22.3 percent to 472,121. The fastback almost doubled, to 71,042, while the convertible fell to 44,808.123

Shelby built 1,174 or 1,175 GT350s and 2,050 GT500s, all fastbacks. They are not in the Mustang total.278sources disagree

The story of the year

The rivals arrive

For 1967 the Mustang met new rivals from General Motors, the Chevrolet Camaro and the Pontiac Firebird. Ford answered with a huskier Mustang that could take a big-block V8.910

A GT with the automatic transmission was badged GTA, and 1967 was the only year Ford offered it.911

It was also the last year of the 271 hp High Performance 289.911

The 1966, for comparison

A bigger body

The body grew. The 1967 is 183.6 inches long and 70.9 wide, against 181.6 and 68.2 for the 1964½–66 car, on the same 108-inch wheelbase.5one source

Room for a big-block

The new body was made to take a big-block V8, and the 390 cu in V8 (VIN code S) joined the engine list.15

Concave tail lamps

The tail lamps are concave and set into the rear panel, new for 1967.51213

A scoop with two vents

Ahead of the rear wheel, the 1966's chrome trim gave way to a side scoop with two vents.51314

Headlamps reach the grille

On the 1964½–66, a separate panel with three gills sits between the headlamp and the grille. On the 1967 the headlamp bezel reaches the grille, and the panel is gone.1415one source

A higher body line

The crease along the side sits higher. On the 1964½–66 it runs at about the middle of the headlamp.1415one source
